DON’T WAIT, CHECK THE DATE
For National Fire Safety Week, the National Fire Prevention Association recommends that you replace your fire alarms every 10 years. To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm. The following are recommendations on keeping your family safe with fire alarms.
1. Install fire alarms on every level of the home including the basement and inside AND outside every bedroom. Large homes might need extra fire alarms.
2. It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one goes off they all sound.
3. Test all smoke alarms once a month.
4. There are two types of fire alarms. Ionization alarms are quicker to warn about flames and Photoelectric are quicker to warn about smoke. It is best to have some of each in the home
5. Smoke alarms should be located on the ceiling or high on a wall
6. People who are hard of hearing should have strobing lights and bed shakers
Roughly 2 out of 3 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that do not work…keep your family safe with working fire alarms!
